Because of the unusual heavy and continuous rain in Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures yesterday and last night, before noon there happened a big debris flow in Atami, it has swept about twenty houses away. Atami is the popular travel destination with famous hot springs in Shizuoka prefecture, I have been there many times for my holiday trip. Unfortunately the whole town of Atami is on the slopes towards the narrow beach. It’s not a small town in countryside, just 1 hour trip from Tokyo by bullet train and many people living in and around Tokyo have been there, every Japanese knows the name of this town so this news is rather shocking. Also there have happened many minor landslides or floods in various places, now we are gloomily waiting for the follow up reports about how many lives are lost or missing.
This annual rainy season, the summer heat, then typhoons … all of these make our summer a kind of season of natural disaster. Any Japanese knows it. And I dare say, this is NEVER be a time for us to have big international events and welcome a massive number of foreign visitors!! We need to use various resources to help the victims and reconstruction after the disasters.
